Crock Pot Chuck Roast

March 3rd, 2010

We have friends visiting for Daytona Beach Bike Week. The guys are busy going to such esoteric events as coleslaw wrestling and wet T-shirt contests and Jackie and I are spending our time shopping and seeing girly movies like It’s Complicated. As an aside, this is the second time I have seen this movie and I can’t get over my obsession with chocolate croissants. We have done some cooking. We had an excellent pork tenderloin on the grill, but most of the time we are out and about all day long. That is why, when Jackie told me about this recipe for crock pot chuck roast, I unearthed the crock pot and we put it on and left for the day. What is different about this roast is the way it is seasoned. Jackie rubbed both sides with cinnamon and garlic salt. She then browned it and we put it in the crockpot with about 1/2 cup beef broth. The use of cinnamon sounded strange to me but it imparted a unique flavor to the roast. I have never had a mole sauce but with the addition of chocolate this may be approaching that flavor. I haven’t had time to research it, so let me know if I am right or wrong about the flavors. I just know that we loved it.
CROCK POT CHUCK ROAST
1 4 pound chuck roast ( Try to find one that is at least 3 to 4 inches thick)
Ground cinnamon sprinkled on each side
Garlic salt or powder sprinkled on each side
Salt (if not using garlic salt) and Pepper to taste
1/2 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon olive oil to brown roast
Coat chuck roast on both side with seasonings. Brown in olive oil seasoned skillet. Transfer to crock pot, add beef broth and cook on low for about 8 hours. Remove the roast and degrease the juices. Thicken the gravy with a slurry of flour and water.
By the way, I think coleslaw wrestling is a huge waste of coleslaw. It is not pretty.

  1. Another delicious recipe that I am excited to make. I am loving my crock pot while the days are cold, but it is also a great thing to use at the lake to have a meal ready after a long day on the boat.

My daughter mentioned something about chocolate croissants after seeing It’s Complicated. I’ll have to see the movie. I hope it doesn’t ruin my diet!!

This sounds very good. I gave up my crockpot when I retired thinking, now I will have time to cook. There have been a few times when I have missed it, but not enough to buy a new one. I could do a slow roast in the oven on this and I am sure it would taste very good. Love the cinnamon idea. I am getting braver in adding cinnamon to food that is not sweet. Mole, by the way, is delicious.

Yes to the cinnamon. I rub it and some brown sugar and hot sauce on a pork tenderloin and it is so good. The crockpot idea is even better. Make and walk away. Bike weeks sounds like a hoot. Wrestling in coleslaw, now that one made me laugh. I hear good things about that movie too and will have to add it to my netflix list.

  9. Simple and delicious – gotta love it.
Now, about that cole slaw wrestling..

  10. This certainly looks delicious! I very rarely use my cock pot but wish there were more things I like prepared in it – I think I’ll give this one a try! Thanks! 🙂

Coleslaw wrestling? I remain in awe of things people do to get attention….. I wish I still had my crockpot – although it’s been gone too many years to remember… But this roast sounds delicious. I don’t use cinnamon enough (other than in my apple/yogurt every day)

You know, I think this sounds delicious. I’m just starting to get into meats with cinnamon and I’m finding that I like the flavor.

    Cole slaw resting? Gross!

I don’t use my crockpot often enough. They’re so great, too… just throw something in there in the morning and come home to a ready-made dinner that makes the whole house smell good. I think a little cinnamon would really add to the flavor here… will have to try it.
