The Magic of Venice

Venice close-up of gondola

Venice is like no other vacation destination.  This decadent, elegantly decaying city is uniquely grand.  From the Grand Canal to the alleyways and waterway tributaries, it is a delight to the senses.  Getting lost in Venice is a good thing.  You never know what you will find around the next corner.

Venice gondoliersWe wandered from the main thoroughfare of the Grand Canal to alleys so small we had to walk single file.

Venice AlleyBut every path led to a view of water, piazzas, and ancient buildings.  I was also on a quest in Venice.  I wanted to find a restaurant that my blogging buddy, Penny of The Comforts of Home, told me about.  While she and her hubby and another couple were in Venice a few years ago, they found a charming restaurant while wandering, but they found it through the back (or kitchen) entrance.  Not having any idea how to get back to their hotel through the front door, they departed through the kitchen and applauded the kitchen staff for a fine meal as they left.   So with the name of the restaurant, Poste Vecie, and the loose directions of “near the Rialto Fish Market”, we found it!

DAY 7 - VEnise 191

We took a little break from our group and had a quiet lunch together while our friends did other things.  As much as you love your traveling companions, it is good to have a break now and then.  It gave us time to shop for family and look at sights that were of particular interest to us.

We had a great meal on the patio of Poste Vecie.  The interior of the trattoria has a timeless warmth.

David’s seafood stew was wonderful, as was my Sole Meuniere.

Assumption of the Virgin

After lunch we visited the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.  It features the work of three great Renaissance masters: Donatello, Bellini and Titian.  Above, Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin was called the most beautiful picture in the world by Canova.

Venice at night

We ended our two day tour of Venice with an evening Vaporetto boat tour of the Grand Canal.  Venice after dark presents an even more charming face.  Our next destination – Tuscany.

  1. Hi dear Penny! I’m home too and now able to go back and read/greatly enjoy all your beautiful photos and the interesting stories of your fabulous trip. You did see some wonderful places yet again – we are so fortunate to visit these countries and enjoy our time with the people, the many historic venues, and share in everyday life which is often so different from here in the US, right?

Glad you found our dear friend Penny’s restaurant in Venice – oh isn’t Venice exquisite! I think you extremely brave to ride the motorcycle in those less than perfect road conditions! The views were awesome though.

Sorry you are out of commission for a while – hopefully this will soon be over and you can get about again. Bob has a plate and screws in his ankle (19 yrs.) but thankfully it doesn’t appear he’ll have to get them removed, at least no time soon.

Take care, enjoy NC fall days – wet here in Raleigh, but should be clearing up soon and then I must get out in the garden and plant up Spring bulbs etc.

    Love, Mary

Looks like you had a great visit to Venice including delicious food. We ate ate a restaurant on the Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge and the main thing I remember was the price.

  3. I am so glad you were able to find that restaurant and that you both enjoyed it! I think Venice was one of our favorite cities.

So fun seeing you and David the other day. Hope we can get together again soon.

I think it’s so great that you were able to find the restaurant Penny liked…a nice link to home and friends. I also love that all three of my good NC friends have Venice in common…one day for myself and Alan maybe??!

Love your posts and photos, dear.

  9. Isn’t it nice to find a little restaurant off the beaten track that isn’t filled with tourists. It sounds like Penny’s recommendation was a good one. Hope you are on the mend and enjoying lovely fall weather on the lake.

What a wonderful journey, Penny! I loved the second photo – it could have been a painting.
It has been years since I was in Venice, and that was with small children. I think it’s time to go back!
